The University of Waterloo, my alma mater, just announced a competition to redesign the south entrance to the university (read it here). Nothing unusual about this.  Lots of institutions launch similar competitions. What caught my eye was that they opened it up ONLY to the entire university, not to professi0nal architectural firms. UWaterloo has an Architecture department and an Environmental department. In most university, opening up the competition to these two departments would probably be the norm.
